General dentistry plays a crucial role in oral health. Regular check-ups help detect and address problems early, preventing complications. Our Dentists provide guidance on oral hygiene, ensuring teeth and gums remain healthy, reducing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other dental concerns. Here’s how regular dental check ups help with the following:

Bacteria lives in our mouths, feeds on sugar in our food, fermenting it into acid which attacks our teeth.  You can help prevent decay by:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice per day.
  • Brushing for at least 2 minutes, especially at night time.
  • Watching the amount of sugar in your food.
  • Watching how often food is consumed (snacking is high risk).
  • Avoiding acidic food and drink (especially soft drinks).

It’s recommended to get your teeth checked every 6 months.

Gum Disease

Tartar is a hard calcified build up on your teeth that grows, similar to the the scale in your kettle or water pipes.  Bacterial growth ca cause infection in your gums and also the jaw bone.  As we age, this damage causes bad breath and unsightly black triangles between teeth.  Eventually we become ‘long in the tooth’ and the teeth become loose and fall out.  This infection is also linked to low birth weight babies of pregnant women and also heart disease.  This is the most common reason for people to lose their teeth.  There is no cure but the disease can be controlled by removing the tartar on a regular basis.

You can help prevent gum disease by having your teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months.

Broken Teeth

Cracks in either teeth or fillings can allow bacteria inside the tooth and cause infection or pain.  If a tooth is heavily filled or overloaded, your dentist may discuss alternatives other than fillings such as a crown.  We use tiny cameras in the mouth to show you if any teeth are at risk of further problems.

Just like skin checks, regular dental check ups can detect early signs of cancer and be treated. Cancer in the mouth needs early detection as it can be very rapid and aggressive.

Regular Dental Check Ups Helps You Live Longer

Studies show that people with their natural teeth are healthier and live longer than those without.  Regular dental care means better chewing, a more nutritious diet and reduced heart disease.
