Tooth Coloured Fillings

Tooth-coloured fillings, also known as composite resin fillings, are a modern and highly aesthetic solution for restoring teeth affected by decay, wear, or minor damage. Designed to closely match the natural colour of your teeth, these restorations provide a discreet and effective way to restore both function and appearance.

Composite fillings are made from a durable blend of resin and fine glass particles. This material is carefully colour-matched to your existing tooth structure and bonded directly to the tooth, allowing for a strong and natural-looking result.

In addition to their appearance, tooth-coloured fillings are a conservative treatment option. Because the material bonds to the tooth surface, less healthy tooth structure typically needs to be removed compared to traditional filling materials.

When are tooth-coloured fillings used?

Tooth-coloured fillings are commonly used to:

  • Treat dental decay (cavities)
  • Repair chipped, cracked, or worn teeth
  • Replace older or defective fillings
  • Restore both front and back teeth where aesthetics are important

These fillings are suitable for most areas of the mouth and offer a balance of strength and appearance.

What to expect during treatment

Placement of a tooth-coloured filling is usually completed in a single appointment. After removing any decay, the tooth is cleaned and prepared. The composite material is then applied in layers, shaped to match the natural contours of the tooth, and hardened using a special curing light.

Benefits of tooth-coloured fillings

  • Natural appearance: Blends seamlessly with surrounding teeth
  • Bonded to the tooth: Provides support and helps preserve tooth structure
  • Versatile: Suitable for both functional and cosmetic restorations
  • Single-visit treatment: Typically completed in one appointment
  • Ready to go: Following your treatment appointment the filling is fully cured and hardened and ready to eat on, you just need to be careful of any numbness in lips and/or tongue

Longevity and care

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, tooth-coloured fillings can last many years. However, like all dental restorations, they may eventually wear, stain, or require replacement over time.

Maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding excessive hard or sticky foods, brushing and flossing to clean, and attending routine dental visits will help maximise the lifespan of your fillings.

Cerec Same Day Crowns/Fillings

In 2017 we added the new technology of CEREC to our options for white fillings and crowns. With Cerec the cavity is scanned with a 3D camera and the filling is milled out of a solid ceramic block.

This allows for much stronger more accurate fillings that have no gaps, voids and bubbles, or shape discrepancies compared to traditional direct filling placement resin fillings.
